Q Interpretation / Interpretive Criticism Read chapter three well. Then look at the photographs of the two buildings on page 49 in your textbook, and read the text information and Perception Key on pages 48-50. Sullivan's Guaranty (Prudential) Building and Le Corbusier's Notre Dame-du-Haut are considered to be masterpieces of architecture, representing different time periods and different functions. The small black-and-white photograph of Sullivan's building is not very helpful when considering the form, content, and merits of this building. To get a better understanding of this building, view the four web pages beginning here. You should view at least some of the photographs from all four pages—especially the last page, which contains photographic views of the bank's interior. (You can click on any of the photos to see a larger view.) Are you surprised by the lavish detail and lush botanical images covering almost every surface? Do these photographs change your evaluation of this building? Although the color photograph of Notre Dame-du-Haut is more satisfying, it can only show one view of a very complicated and varied work of architecture. This page contains a more satisfying set of pictures taken from various angles, both outside and in. Clicking on the first image will start a slide show which can be controlled with arrow buttons. Be sure to view the entire show so that you can see the interior shots. Do these photographs help you to better understand the design and layout of this unique structure? After studying and viewing the photos from these two websites, choose either the Prudential Guaranty Building in Buffalo, New York - or - the Notre Dame-du-Haut at Ronchamp, France. Number (1 - 4) and answer each of the following discussion questions: 1. Which building did you choose? Why? 2. Everyone has an idea of what a chapel looks like and what a bank looks like. Did the building you chose confirm what you expect from that type of building – bank or chapel? Or did it go against your expectations? In either case, why? 3. The subject matter of these buildings could be seen as their function—in other words, the subject of Notre Dame-du-Haut is "chapel" and the subject of the Guaranty (Prudential) Building is "bank." As we have learned, the artistic form should reveal something more significant than just the subject matter. So, what is revealed by the artistic form of the building you selected? What does the form say about the meaning, on a deeper level, of "chapel" or "bank"? 4. Every work of art reveals something about the artist as well. What do you think Sullivan thought about banking or what Le Corbusier thought about religion, just based on their architectural designs? Note: You should only answer these questions for ONE of the buildings—either the bank - or - the chapel. Remember, your participation and response should clearly reflect your reading and understanding of the chapter and specific content for this session.

I chose La Chapelle Notre-Dame du Haut because its complex architecture appealed to me.I used to have an idea that chapels must have Greek-style pillars with interior domes and vaults. This building is far beyond my idea of what an ideal chapel might look like. I got my idea about the chapels from studying the Romanesque and Gothic building designs of the chapels which are different from the one shown in the photo. This chapel looks like a modern artwork that rejected many classical architectural ideals
